CHEERS! and welcome to EXCELLENT ONLINE, the wayward home for music nerds of all shapes and sizes. We also function as the homepages for the Excellent E-Mail Discussion List, a collective for hipsters, Anglophiles, and indiekids across the globe.

Since you're here and reading this now, odds are that you're just like us -- people who care about music a little too much for your own good. Congratulations -- you've just found a safehaven.

Excellent Online was launched, and proudly remains, a NON-commercial website, run BY music fans FOR music fans. This isn't our day job, nor do we hope to get rich with this endeavor. We're here to bridge gaps, blur miles, and unite indie fans together into one massive conglomerate (by which we one day hope to enslave the world. But for now, let's stick to the music.)

Now, many indie rock sites out there seem to feel that it's necessary to begin an information section with a quaint little diatribe about how Gene or Radiohead or whoever changed their lives, and how those who DON'T listen to Gene or Radiohead or whoever aren't fit to walk the streets. We'll spare you the poetry, folks. If you're here, you're part of the indie music extremist fanbase, so by now you should know the score. There's no need in telling you how important the music is, it's already a driving force in your life.

The goal of EXCELLENT is to become YOUR top site for news, information, reviews, and critical analysis of the music you love. Check out the site a little bit -- among other things, you'll find:
  • a COMPREHENSIVE news section, updated as often as we can muster.
  • interviews with as many bands as we can track down.
  • an ever-growing abyss of album, single, and concert reviews, written by folks in the know -- YOU.
  • tour itineraries for Indie bands playing in North America
  • release information for upcoming singles and albums, both UK and US release dates...
  • monthly columns written by members of our Excellent mailing list (see below)
  • links to every important Web resource for modern day indiedom
  • contact information for hundreds of indie fans living all over the world. North America's a pretty big continent, and stumbling across other Camera Obscura fans in the States can be tricky. Hopefully our listings can help point you to folks in your own region. Don't laugh, but we've actually had folks meet and MARRY thanks to our site.
  • an application to join the Excellent Mailing List (see below.)
The most important part of Excellent Online is YOU. Like we said, this isn't our day job. We can't survive without interaction from YOU, you sexy little music geek. Ever read a concert review and thought, "Good gravy, that dude got it ALLLLL wrong." Ever come across a one-star review of a concert that YOU thought changed your life? Think of Excellent as YOUR platform to sound off. You can leave comments under each and every news story and review that we post. AND... if you want to submit your own review or tip us off to a news story, we'll gladly put it up. When we say this is YOUR site, we're not kidding.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US:

EXCELLENT began as an idea launched by 4 former members of the Grand Central Indiepop list (an early AOL message board.) Eventually the Indiepop list closed down, and many of us members were forced to roam the streets, yelling out news of upcoming Bluetones tour dates (and inevitable Bluetones tour cancellations) to passing strangers. Obviously this didnt do the trick, so we decided once again to reunite on a mailing list format. Thus, the Excellent-UK-Indie Mailer was formed on October 6, 1996. On February 1, 1998, we launched our first site as simply a homepage for our mailing list. What we ended up with was a whirlwind of activity and accolades that made us quickly outgrow our confines. Hence, on March 3, 1999, we made the move to excellentonline.com.

We launched our e-mail discussion mailing list at the height of Britpop madness back in the glory days of the 90's. Back then, we catered to the North American Anglophile sect -- if you've got a Smiths poster on one of your walls, you know what we're talking about. Back then, it was nearly impossible to find info about UK indie bands, and we worked our bums off to fill that much-needed niche.

A few years later, though, something happened: we woke up. We woke up to sounds of bands from the States... from Scandinavia... from Australia... and realized we were limiting ourselves by catering to JUST British music. A whole world of stellar indiepop was out there being ruthlessly ignored by our Anglophiliac tendencies. From that point on, we decided to no longer be "THE home for US fans of UK music." Now we're just the home for fans of GREAT music, be it from Manchester, Madrid, or Madagascar.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE SITE:

Well, there's not much to say, other than LOOK AROUND. We're not too concerned about catchy graphics and animation in these parts - it just slows the loading time down, and our focus is INFORMATION, 'cause it's something dreadfully lacking to many of us. Please use the feedback link from the main page to send us any comments. We're not professionals at this, folks, so any comments, suggestions, or new links are always greatly appreciated.

Anyhow, please enjoy your visit on the site. And be sure to bookmark us and check back regularly, because we are CONSTANTLY updating information in our attempt to unite the Indie Anglophile masses.
